Film Cameras and Digital Cameras
Comparing film cameras with digital cameras, we can see several differences, including the way of developing films and the quality of pictures, however taking pictures of memories is a common purpose. People can get film cameras only at a camera shop, but it sold at a reasonable price, so they have been used by many people for a long time. Digital cameras are getting popular among people, and there are many kinds of them at stores. These two types of cameras have their own unique and some common advantages, so people choose one to match their purpose.
First of all, film cameras were invented around 1900. They spread throughout the whole world, and were used for a long time. Their users have decreased recently, but they are still loved by professional cameramen. In contrast, the first digital cameras were sold in 1933. They were getting popular in these years, and the percentage of the digital cameras’ demand has

increased 122% in 2003 to 2006. (Fuji-keizai) Å@Ken Rockwell stated that “most people get better results with digital cameras.”(Ken Rockwell RSS) Å@This is because digital cameras have establish an automatic system, so people do notÅ@have to set up their cameras. On the other hand, he stated that “extremely skilled photographers can get better results on film if they can complete the many more steps from shot to print all perfectly.”(Ken Rockwell RSS)Å@ This is because film cameras have the handwork system in detail, and people can change it the way they like. Professional skills are needed, and they might take better picture than with digital cameras.
There are several advantages and faults with both film and digital cameras. First, the prices of film cameras are more reasonable than that of digital cameras. Takuya Iwasaki stated that especially there are great difference between the prices of single-lens reflex cameras on his website.(Yakei-satsuei.com) However, when people take pictures with film cameras, they need to get film every time they run out. In contrast, digital cameras are sold at comparatively high prices, but people don’t need to get films, so there is no extra expenditure. Second, when people take pictures with digital cameras, they just take whatever they like and can clear pictures which they don’t like before developing them. Also, they can quickly check

how pictures look, so it is easy to take favorite pictures. Film cameras are, however, not able to clear their data, so they also have to develop pictures which they don’t like, and it will cost more. They also can’t check how pictures look before developing, but it will be big fun to develop and look at them. Finally, cycles of these cameras are different. Film cameras’ using cycles are shorter than digital cameras, so people can use them for a long time. In addition this, new types of digital cameras come out at stores several times a year, so a camera sold two years ago might be regarded as a very old one. It is stated that:
New formats, new models, different types of sensors, ways of recording media-image acquisition gets better, more affordable and more accessible as manufacturers up the stakes with new offerings several times a year. (Mac Video)
From the above quotation, digital cameras’ selling cycles could be advantages.
Film cameras are inferior to digital cameras in general use, but disposable cameras are also a kind of film camera. The percentage of the disposable cameras’ demand has increased 78% in 2003 to 2006 (Fuji-keizai), and they are still used by many people. It is troubling to think that

disposable cameras will be gone in several years, but Noriaki Chiba state in his book that disposable cameras will never be gone because they are very useful.(Kamera joushiki no… P.33) People can get disposable cameras at a convenience store, a kiosk or anywhere easily at a reasonable price, this is the biggest reason why they are go popular with many people.
In conclusion, digital cameras are far more than easy to take good pictures for general scene, but film cameras can take more delicate and beautiful pictures. Both cameras have advantages and faults, so it can be said that people should choose the camera depending on their application, and enjoy taking pictures.
